What You Need

To play Mutant Mayhem you're going to need a few things. These are the essentials:

  • People: You'll need at least two, but preferably more, people; four to six people is considered ideal by most. One person will take on the responsibilities of Proctor; the rest will be players.
  • Space to play: Folks commonly use a dining room table; some folks sometimes have dedicated gaming tables. Any area with enough seating for all and a surface large enough and suitable for rolling dice and writing will work.
  • A copy of the Mutant Mayhem roleplaying game book: You're currently reading it; so you have that covered already.
  • Dice: You'll need at least one set of Fate dice. Fate dice are six sided dice with a plus symbol on two faces, a minus symbol on two faces, and two blank faces. A set consists of four dice. Fate dice are also known as Fudge dice, named after another game system that uses them. Alternatively, you can use a deck of Fate cards; a deck of 81 cards that provides results that mimic rolling four Fate dice.
  • Stationery and Writing tools: You'll need something to record your character's information. A printed Mutant Mayhem character sheet usually works best; but plain or lined note paper will also work. You may also want to have some note paper handy for recording important information about the unfolding story during play. You should also have index cards, sticky notes, or similar pieces of paper that can used during play; how to use these will be explained later. You should also have a small assortment of pens, pencils, and markers.
  • Tokens: The tokens will be used as fate points. You can use glass beads, coins, poker chips, candies, or similar. Have about 30-40 of them.
